Canon 1.4x III Extender

My shiny new 1.4 tele-extender showed up last week.

The Canon 1.4x is proving to be quite the little addition to my arsenal.

My first observation was that the teleconverter was surprisingly heavy(7.9oz/225g) for its size. It is built to the same quality as the rest of the L glass.  Canon claims that it has all the same weather sealing properties as the rest of the L line

Paired with my 7D body and my f2.8 200mm lens, this sucker has increased the effective range of that setup by quite a good margin(1.4x to be exact).  The crop sensor on the 7D makes the 200, look like a 320, add the extender and it is closing in on 450mm f4 zoom lens.  Not too shabby and it only costs me 1 stop to add the tele-extender.

The fit from the extender to the body and then from the body to the lens seems very secure.  obviously a lot of weight pulling on either end of it with the body and whatever glass you have mounted.  I don't question it for a second

There is a picture quality penalty shooting with the the extender, not a ton, but noticeable to me when I have photos up in lightroom or photoshop.  the speed of focusing does not seem to have slowed noticeably, I shot a soccer game with it on a 5DMKIII body on the first weekend it arrived and the AF system worked well.
